The Trailer

The Review

The Ugly Truth is a romantic comedy film starring Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler. The film is pretty much an all-round girls production, where Heigl herself is a producer for the film and written by a team of three women.

If you love Legally Blonde, then you’ll know what to expect of the film, as it’s the same producers who is behind the Legally Blonde hit.

The story revolves around TV producer Abby Richter (Katherine Heigl) who has issues such as being too controlling and slightly anally-retentive which puts off the string of men she mets.

And comes Mike Chadway (Gerard Butler), the brash and cynical commentator who ’saves’ and made a promise bet that Abby would find the man of her dreams by helping her, in return that she will stop being so hard on him.

After watching the movie, I found the supporting cast was quite forgettable, and I was surprised at the ‘R’ ratings. I didn’t find the adult humor raunchy nor shocking. Maybe I’ve become too desensitize to movies theme of male/female relationships.

It has a predictable ending, the dialogue was fast, sexy and snappy. Never boring, but I felt the romance is very much ‘labored’, the chemistry was off and as if both the lead stars was trying to hard to pull off the script.

The Good

  • Great comedic timing
  • The slapstick humor was funny and wasn’t corny
  • Not your typical chick-flick, caters to the men too

The Bad

  • R rated film
  • Predictable
  • Mediocre story
  • Manufactured chemistry
