The Trailer

The Review

Technically Humpday means a term coined for the middle of the work week, which is all about getting over the hump of Wednesday, but writer, director and co-star of the film Lynn Shelton has adopted the term instead with a homo-erotic resonance.

As we all know most of the gay related movies out there are made at the expense of gay lifestyles, while this movie itself is about exploring how straight men feels about gay sex, and how they identify themselves.

The story is about Ben who is married and settled down and was reunited with his college buddy Andrew, who is a slacker and drifter.

They immediately reconnect and their new found rekindled friendship while at the same time puts a strain on Ben’s relationship with his wife, it also brought their friendship to a whole new level one night at the pub.

After a night of boozing and smoking dope, both of them made a pact based on a dare to film themselves having sex with each other, as an “artistic statement.”

The thing is, since they are not gay, it will be an all more difficult for both of them. Watch as the movie unfolds as how they handled the situation at hand with humanity and authenticity.

It will put any straight-male masculinity to the test, and explores what a male-male friendship-bond really is, and it’s breaking point. Will two straight guys setting out on a dare hump each other as they promised?

There were some parts of the movie for which I find uncomfortable watching, but I think every heterosexual dude in the movie I reckon would feel the same way, as it can be a pretty realistic situation occurring to them, if the role was reversed, plus the guys in the movie came across as believable “regular joe”, not the typical buff physical specimen you would see in films.

Sometimes it’s these types of indie genre movies that eclipse big-budget Hollywood films, where it uncovers new talent, or reveals the truth in a unexpected new ways.

The Good

  • The two leads was excellent
  • Alycia Delmore as wife gave great performance too
  • Filmed mostly by hand-held camera, adds a certain realness to it

The Bad

  • A lot of repetitive but different dialogues of the same topic at hand
  • As the movie progresses, you only just want to know more and more what the outcome will be
  • The ending leaves little to be desired, and more to your imagination
