The Trailer
The Review
Well this movie was on hold for two years by Paramount before being released.
With that it all indicates that the producers deem that the movie lacks the quality and finishing touches, but after watching it, it ain’t that bad of a supernatural horror movie. I’ve seen far worst.
It does has it flaws, a major one is the cast mismatch. I truly believe Renee Zellweger, an Oscar winning actress that she may be, she’s not convincing enough for me in any of her horror genre movie roles.
Ideally she should really stick to her Bridget Jones types of movies.
The story for Case 39 is about an over-worked social worker Emily Jenkins who saved a kid while working on her 39th case, Lillith Sullivan (Jodelle Ferland) whom she believed was being abused. Emily even temporarily adopts Lillith while waiting for her new foster parents.
Lo and behold it seems, the seemingly innocent girl Lillith begins to cast doubts in Emily and her child psychiatrist boyfriend Douglas (Bradley Cooper), as various people Lillith comes in contact starts dropping like flies, no pun intended of course.
Jodelle Ferland who played the kid really stole the show. She was really creepy for me.
Case 39 lack originality where cheap Hollywood scare tactics was employed, but it makes up for it in the solid pace, although it could have done better in the CGI aspects to make the movie more convincing.
The Good
- Has some good creepy scenes
- The movie’s pace is appropriate to its mood
The Bad
- A good example of poor filmmaking
- Random unrelated scares that puzzles you
- Has borrowed scenes, reminds me too much of the movie ‘Orphan’
